When detected early, colorectal cancer is very treatable. Moncrief Cancer Institute offers colorectal cancer screening, called a fecal immunochemical test (FIT) that is simple and convenient – at no cost for individuals who are uninsured and for those who qualify. This test is a stool-based screening that looks for hidden blood in the stool, which could be caused by colorectal cancer.
Who Should Get Screened?
According to new guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, you should begin screening at age 45. Those who have a family history of colorectal cancer may be at higher risk and may need to be screened earlier. If you are at a high risk, talk to your doctor about screening options and when to begin your screenings.
To qualify for our program, you must:
- Be between the age of 45 and 75
- Be a current resident in the state of Texas
- Have no personal history of colorectal cancer, colorectal resection (surgery), inflammatory bowel disease, or colorectal polyps
- Have not had
- A stool-based test in the last year
- A sigmoidoscopy exam (to look inside the rectum and lower colorectal) within the last 5 years
- A colonoscopy exam (to look inside the rectum and entire colorectal) within the last 10 years
