Cancer Prevention and Screening
Cancer statistics can be startling:
- More than 1.7 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2019 and an estimated 606,880 people will die of the disease (Source: American Cancer Society).
- Approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetime (Source: National Cancer Institute, based on 2013-2015 data).
However, today we have more tools and knowledge than ever to prevent and detect cancer.
By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can decrease your odds of cancer ever occurring. And by getting screened for certain types of cancer, you can detect it early, when treatment is more likely to be successful.
Want proof that you can win the fight against cancer? A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found a 20% rise in the number of cancer survivors. It also found that about one in every 20 adults in the United States has survived cancer, including nearly one-fifth of all people over 65. In 2016, there were an estimated 15.5 million cancer survivors in the United States, and that number is expected to increase to 20.3 million by 2026 (Source: National Cancer Institute).
